November 2023: Embedding Virtual in Regional Care

Presented by Dr Shannon Nott, Rural Health Director of Medical Services, Western NSW Local Health District

Through his work with Western NSW LHD, Dr Shannon Nott led the implementation of the region’s vCare critical care hub, a 24/7 virtual support and logistics centre designed to assist rural and remote communities. Shannon has also led the creation of Australia’s first Virtual Rural Generalist Service as well as the development of a Virtual Clinical Pharmacy Service for rural communities. Most recently, Shannon has been Chief Investigator for the Translational Research Grant: “A stepped wedge trial of efficacy and scalability of a virtual clinical pharmacy service (VCPS) in rural and remote NSW health facilities,” as well as the COVID-19 Research Grant: “Evaluation of the Virtual Rural Generalist Service.”

October 2023: Learning and outcomes from co-design – the right to rehabilitation for people with dementia

Presented by A/Prof Michele Callisaya, Senior Research Fellow, Peninsula Clinical School, Monash University & DELIVER Chief Investigator

A/Prof Callisaya has a strong record of achievement in translational health and medical research having contributed to knowledge creation, dissemination and translation within health services. Her research is recognised internationally in the field of dementia, frailty and falls as well as the use of technology to deliver interventions for older people. Her work provides part of the basis for the development of a novel app that delivers progressive exercise to prevent falls in older people. As a Chief Investigator on the DELIVER program, Michele provides clinical, research and technical expertise in the area of technology for older people.

A/Prof Callisaya covered a range of areas including care pathways for dementia care (for people with dementia and their carers), tips for co-design, principles of engagement, study scope and results.

July 2023: Victoria’s Virtual care programs, Framework and Strategy

Chetna Soni and Amelia Matlock from the Victorian Department of Health outlined their vision of “Victoria’s Virtual care programs, Framework and Strategy”.

We heard about existing virtual programs  including Better@Home, Victorian Virtual ED and COVID + Pathways covering the care continuum from urgent care, acute, post op, outpatient and integrated care. The Victorian Virtual Care Operational Framework outlines the key areas of focus including clinical governance, access and equity and evaluation. The Framework sits alongside the Victorian Virtual care strategy and outlines the vision and pathway to integrate virtual care in our State.

Dr Olivia Metcalf,  a Senior Research Fellow for the University of Melbourne’s Centre for Digital Transformation of Health, who also presented on the current state of the evidence for remote patient monitoring (RPM). She highlighted what the evidence tells us about the identified outcomes for RPM including clinical and cost effectiveness well as some of the key challenges faced by RPM projects.
